[IT] Il comando uptime in MS-Dos: l’ennesima porcata made in Microsoft

Da utente con un buon background *NIX, ricavare l’uptime (il tempo di funzionamento del sistema dall’ultima accensione) di una macchina per me è sempre stato sinonimo di apertura del Terminale e immissione del comando “uptime“.

Semplice, veloce, facile da memorizzare, facile da adoperare negli scripts e soprattutto universale.

Ma su MS-Dos, brutta copia delle shell *NIX, anche le operazioni così semplici diventano fonte inesauribile di bestemmie, e dimostrano, per l’ennesima volta, quanto i software Microsoft siano stati prodotti senza un’efficiente pianificazione su carta prima della stesura del codice.

[IT] Una funzione di GEdit (Linux) che Windows e Mac dovrebbero assolutamente copiare!

Su Linux, se con l’ottimo editor GEdit apri un file di testo e subito dopo lo modifichi con qualsiasi altro programma / processo, ti appare una simpatica tendina che ti notifica l’avvenuto cambiamento e ti chiede se vuoi ricaricare il file. Una funzione estremamente valida per chi scripta e programma come me, e di cui personalmente avevo bisogno da anni.

Peccato che gli editor di testo per Windows e Mac, le piattaforme che uso maggiormente, non la annoverino tra le features, e, in fase di testing, ogni volta che l’output testuale (txt, log, csv..) di un mio script o di un mio software cambia, devo chiudere e riaprire il file a mano come i primitivi per visualizzarne i cambiamenti.

A ragion veduta, quindi, per una volta si può decisamente affermare che:

Linux WIN, Windows e Mac FAIL.

I was cleaning up the ID3 tags of a bunch of gigabytes of music as I always do before adding them to my iTunes library, and I stumbled upon some releases by PlasticPassion netlabel. It’s not the first time that I find a lot of garbage in the “Genre” ID3 tag but I can’t yet understand what’s the coolness of this trend.

Do you seriously feel cool writing shit inside “Genre” tag dudes?

[IT] Come usare Boxee sul vostro mediacenter senza effettuare il login!

Se finora non siete riusciti a trovare il software perfetto per il vostro mediacenter, è ora che proviate il recentissimo Boxee. Basato su XBMC e su tecnologie Mozilla, Boxee è un software gratuito e multipiattaforma (Windows, Linux, Mac con cpu Intel), che coniuga funzionalità, semplicità d’uso e una grafica da sturbo. Ne ho provato davvero trizillioni di software per mediacenter, ma Boxee è almeno 10 spanne sopra rispetto a quanto visto finora, oltre ad essere decisamente veloce anche su macchine poco performanti come il mio Asus eeePC 701.

L’unico problema che ha è che richiede una connessione internet always-on per funzionare, il che taglia fuori molti utenti che non vogliono o non possono mettere online il proprio computer mediacenter. Dal momento che difficilmente questa scelta cambierà, perchè è voluta dalla casa produttrice del software, mi sono ingegnato per trovare una soluzione per usare Boxee offline, ovvero senza connessione ad internet, senza registrarsi e senza neanche effettuare il primo login!

Premetto che questo tutorial si riferisce a Boxee per Windows XP, ma penso che non farete molta fatica ad adattarlo anche a Boxee per Linux e Mac

[IT] Differenza tra l’uptime di Windows Vista e quello di Mac OS X in fase di standby

Dopo aver tribolato perecchie ore per far funzionare la sospensione (ovvero lo “standby”) sulla mia macchina con Windows Vista, l’ho subito sostituita allo spegni-accendi sistema per via della sua immane comodità. Interrompi il lavoro che stai facendo e senza modificare nulla del tuo workspace sospendi la macchina; premi il pulsante d’accensione e riprendi il lavoro esattamente da dove lo avevi lasciato. Indispensabile.

Però ho notato che, al contrario di quanto accade durante lo sleep di Mac OS X, l’uptime di Windows Vista non tiene conto delle ore che il computer passa in sospensione, bensì soltanto delle ore che effettivamente la macchina è in funzione.

Ad esempio, in questo preciso momento la mia macchina è accesa da circa 4 giorni, ma l’uptime segna soltanto 0d 14h 21m 55.s, come riporta il fido script Samurize che ho sul desktop.

I’m an iTunes-addicted you know, but I’m always searching for new music players and new ways to view, catalogue and listen to my big music collection. Some weeks ago I was reading this post on Anything But iPod blog (subscribe its feeds, it’s a very interesting website) and I stumbled upon the following pic:

When I saw it, I said “Woah, that media player looks amazing! It could be very nice to setup that touchscreen music jukebox I’m thinking about since years!“. Well, that eye-candy and unknown mediaplayer potraited in the pic is Zune Software 4.0.

Zune Software is the iTunes-like application for managing Zune players and brings a really fresh and innovative user interface. I gave it a try and I think it could be a really nice graphical “front-end” for a well-tagged music collection like mine.

Talking about fuctions, it’s not complete, powerful and usable like iTunes, at least for maniacs/pro users like me, but a system with Zune Software as frontend + iTunes & Tagscanner as backend could work lovely as music jukebox.

In recent times, I noticed that some new netlabels are adopting Bandcamp as default hosting solution for their releases. Please, don’t do it. Bandcamp’s download process need too many clicks and it’s slow as fuck, and – talking personally – I cannot spend my whole afternoon for downloading all your fucking releases one by one.

Bandcamp’s download process is one of the best examples of “anti-usability” I stumbled upon in the last months of daily web browsing.
